A great deal of what gets called "dry scalp" is not dryness at all. White flakes and itching are shared symptoms of two opposite conditions: a scalp genuinely short of lipids, and a scalp producing more oil than it needs, on which a naturally resident yeast feeds and generates flakes. The treatment that helps the first makes the second worse.
This is the mistake that brings women back to clinic months later: warm oil on an oily scalp. The logic feels sound — flakes, therefore dryness, therefore moisture — but in the second case oil literally feeds the problem. So before causes, the distinction has to come first.
First: is your scalp actually dry?
Look at your scalp a full day before washing, in good light, parting the hair in several places.

The fastest rule of thumb: if your scalp settles after oil it was dry; if it itches and flakes more after oil, it was not. That is a free, practical test, and it is missing from almost everything written on the subject.
The British Association of Dermatologists describes dandruff as the mild form of seborrhoeic dermatitis — a condition tied to oil and yeast rather than to a lack of moisture. That single fact reverses the treatment logic for a large number of people.

What genuinely dries a scalp
When the dryness is real, several factors usually combine to strip the protective lipids faster than they are replaced.

Three of these are rarely discussed and yet are among the most relevant for readers in the UK and the Gulf:
- Hard water. Across much of southern and eastern England the water is high in calcium and magnesium. It leaves a deposit, shampoo lathers less, so people use more product and scrub harder, and end up with a drier scalp and coarser hair. The classic clue is a scalp that deteriorates after moving to a new city without a single product having changed.
- Central heating and air conditioning. Dry indoor air pulls moisture out of the scalp exactly as it does out of the skin on your face — and the scalp is skin before it is a place where hair grows.
- Dyes and chemical relaxers. These alter the hair shaft and irritate the skin beneath it. Itching that starts within days of a new dye may be contact allergy rather than dryness, and it needs the product stopped rather than more moisturiser applied.

Washing frequency: there is no single right number
This is always presented as a prescription. In practice it is a balance between two errors.

The variable that matters is not the number of days but the harshness of the detergent and the temperature of the water. Someone washing gently in lukewarm water can wash far more often than someone using a stripping shampoo and still have a better scalp. Covering your hair: the real effect
A headscarf, or any covering, does not dry the scalp by itself. It changes the scalp's environment in three ways: it traps heat and moisture, it increases friction along the hairline, and — because of time pressure — it leads many people to cover hair that has not fully dried.
The usual result of that combination is not dryness but greasy dandruff, because a warm, humid environment is exactly what the responsible yeast prefers. The advice therefore runs against intuition: someone who covers her hair and complains of flakes usually needs to dry her hair thoroughly and use fewer oils, not more. A soft cotton lining reduces friction along the hairline, a spot where the complaint recurs without often being traced back to its cause.
When it is neither dryness nor dandruff
Some things that look like ordinary flaking are a different condition that needs diagnosing:
- Scalp psoriasis: thick silvery scale on plaques with well-defined edges, sometimes extending behind the ears or onto the hairline, and not responding to ordinary anti-dandruff shampoo.
- Contact dermatitis: itching and redness that begin within days of a new product — a dye, a relaxer, or a strongly fragranced shampoo.
- Tinea capitis: patches with broken hairs or localised baldness. This is a fungal infection, common in children, and it needs specific medical treatment.
- Systemic causes: an underactive thyroid, iron deficiency and poor nutrition produce dryness spread across skin and hair rather than confined to the scalp.
